Diddy back with at #1, with "Press Play"

In 1996 he said, "ten years from now we'll still be on top." Ten years later he's lived up to that promise, in a way. Though many might not consider him at the top of the hip hop game anymore, Diddy has reached the top of something this year with his new album, Press Play, which hit number 1 on the US Pop Charts for the week ending October 22nd, according to Neilsen Soundscan.

diddle2Its his first number 1 since his 1997 debut album, No Way Out. 1999's Forever and 2001's The Saga Continues both debuted and peaked at number 2. Both those albums, however, sold better (in terms of pure quantity) in their first week than Press Play has. In fact, Press Play has the lowest first-week sales of Diddy's career.

The singles off the album, thus far, haven't made much of a splash. "Tell Me never reached above 50th on any Billboard chart. "Come to Me" has had a little more success, reaching as high as no. 9 on the Billboard Hot 100 and no. 3 on the Hot Rap Tracks Chart.

Of course, this chart-topper didn't exactly conquer Everest. He didn't even have to topple Justin Timberlake, whose FutureSex/LoveSounds fell out of the number one spot two week ago. No, Diddy replaced mighty Rod Stewart at the number one position. Stewart's Still the Same... American Rock Classics of Our Time topped the chart last week but slid to no. 6 this week as Diddy took over.
