Smashing Pumpkins Reunite... Sort of

Frontman Billy Corgan and drummer Jimmy Chamberlain are making music as Smashing Pumpkins once again. The drummer confirmed rumors on the band's MySpace blog, saying "we are indeed creating music again." He also mentioned that the band would be working with Soundgarden and Deftones producer Terry Date. Otherwise little is known about his shadowy project. There has been no announcement of record label affiliation, no planned release dates, and no word on whether or not guitarist James Iha and bassist D'arcy Wretsky or her replacement Melissa Auf Der Maur are joining their former bandmates on the new venture.

Smashing Pumpkins

The band broke up in 2000 after nearly a decade as one of the biggest bands in alternative rock. Their albums Siamese Dream and Melancholy and the Infiinite Sadness were huge hits on top of being hugely influential, but Billy Corgan and the other band members have not had similar success on their own. Corgan's solo album and his project with Zwan were both commercial and critical flops. Melissa Auf Der Maur found some critical praise for her solo albums but neither have made waves commercially, something she probably isn't use to after stints in both Smashing Pumpkins and Hole. Iha has played with A Perfect Circle. Little has been heard from original bassist D'arcy Wretzky (appeared on all albums, replaced for the final tour in 2000) since the breakup.
